New York City is located at the southern tip of New York State, containing five boroughs. It is one of the most populated cities in the world with about 8,550,405 people living in just 305 square miles. When people think big cities, they often think crime. Like any city, New York City does experience crime, but recently there has been drop.
In 2012, NYC has the lowest crime rate and second lowest murder rates among other big cities in the United States. Also, in 2014, there were 328 homicides, which was lower than any other major American city. Officials are not sure what has caused decrease, but there are many suggestions including the increase in NYPD and their tactics, demographic change, the end of the crack epidemic, and other suggestions.
